VPI enters the German market with a 500 MW energy storage investment
The energy company VPI has announced a strategic collaboration with the Norwegian company Quantitas Energy, which specializes in energy storage. As part of this partnership, plans are underway to implement energy storage systems (BESS) with a total capacity of 500 MW and 1 GWh in Germany.
VPI Expands into a New Market
VPI, part of the Vitol Group, has previously focused on the UK and Irish markets, where it has implemented a number of investments, including CCGT power plants (Damhead Creek) and energy storage systems (Lumcloon and Shannonbridge). The company is now planning to expand its operations to the German market, with the help of its strategic partnership with Quantitas Energy. As noted by Jorge Pikunic, CEO of VPI, the Norwegian partner has an extensive portfolio of projects and strong relationships with German stakeholders, including landowners, local authorities, and distribution system operators. He added, “Together, we can help develop the infrastructure needed to facilitate Germany’s energy transition.”
Project Financial Details
VPI plans to invest up to €450 million over the next 3–5 years, working with Quantitas Energy on ten energy storage projects. Most of these will be located in northeastern Germany. Each of the storage facilities will vary in size, but systems with a capacity of around 60 MW will dominate.
VPI’s investment in energy storage systems is a key step in supporting Germany’s energy transition, helping to develop the infrastructure necessary for effectively managing renewable energy sources and stabilizing power grids in the region. This is particularly important as, as mentioned in a previous article, the share of renewable energy in the country’s energy mix continues to break new records.
