Global renewable energy developer and producer Sonnedix has obtained an official electricity trading and supply license in Spain. The decision, issued by Spain’s energy regulator CNMC, allows the independent power producer (IPP) to move beyond its traditional role as a generator and begin selling electricity directly to end customers. This marks an important milestone in the company’s European growth strategy. Following a testing phase, Sonnedix’s management has already announced plans to roll out this integrated commercial model across its other operating markets, including Poland.

The authorization will enable Sonnedix’s Spanish subsidiary to independently manage the balancing and dispatch of electricity generated by its own power plants, while also offering tailored energy products directly to corporate and industrial customers. Through this approach, the company aims to maximize the value of its local portfolio, which primarily consists of large-scale solar photovoltaic plants and energy storage systems.

“Next-Gen IPP” Strategy Changes the Rules of the Game

Spain has been selected as the first country to implement Sonnedix’s proprietary business model known as “Next-Gen IPP.” The concept is based on the full integration of three key pillars within a single operational platform:

  • Renewable energy generation (solar and wind farms),
  • Energy storage (battery energy storage systems – BESS),
  • Direct electricity trading and supply to business customers.

Gregorio Morales, Chief Commercial Officer at Sonnedix, emphasized that the license enables the company to compete in the market on its own terms. It also allows Sonnedix to structure innovative and flexible procurement solutions, including advanced Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), designed to meet the increasingly complex and demanding energy requirements of large enterprises.

Global Portfolio and Prospects for the Polish Market

Sonnedix currently manages more than 4 GW of operating generation capacity worldwide. The company’s total project portfolio—including operational assets, projects under construction, and developments in the pipeline across solar, wind, and energy storage segments—now exceeds 12 GW.

The company operates in key global markets, including Chile, Japan, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, and Poland. Sonnedix Chief Executive Officer Axel Thiemann stated that the success in Spain represents only the beginning of a new chapter for the company. Its goal is to gradually introduce this fully integrated, independent energy supply model across all markets where it is developing renewable energy assets.

As a result, Sonnedix could soon enter the Polish market as a direct electricity supplier to industrial customers as well.
