Polskie Sieci Elektroenergetyczne (PSE) has received approval for the environmental conditions for the Choczewo-Żarnowiec power line, one of the four new lines scheduled for construction in Pomerania, Poland in the coming years. The 400 kV Choczewo-Żarnowiec connection will enhance the northern Poland transmission system and facilitate the reception of power from the initial wind farms in the Baltic Sea.

Anna Łukaszewska-Trzeciakowska, the government plenipotentiary for strategic energy infrastructure, highlights the significance of this step towards expanding power grids for offshore wind energy. This line holds strategic importance for energy security and the transformation of Poland’s energy sector. The implementation of this project by PSE is expected to enable the evacuation of power from offshore wind farms set to be operational by 2026.

Part of a broader investment program, the Choczewo-Żarnowiec line is a key element in PSE’s consistent efforts to enhance energy infrastructure in Pomerania. This program involves the construction of four new 400 kV lines spanning around 250 km and two power substations. Additionally, upgrades and renovations are being conducted on existing infrastructure. The new lines are planned across 22 communes in the Pomeranian Voivodeship, with substations located in Choczewo and the rural commune of Słupsk. These developments will allow for the transfer and distribution of energy from offshore wind farms along the Polish coast.

Włodzimierz Mucha, vice-president of PSE, highlights the complexity of network development investments, involving extensive consultation, formal processes, and legal procedures during the design phase. Social consultations, route planning, and preparations with property owners have been undertaken. The line designs are ready, and PSE is in the process of obtaining legal approvals. Additionally, environmental assessments are ongoing for all new lines associated with offshore wind farms.

PSE aims to select a contractor for the Choczewo-Żarnowiec line’s construction later this year. With the environmental approval in place, the company can proceed to apply for a location decision, the last step before acquiring a building permit, planned for the first half of 2024.
