The largest PV farm in Europe was launched. The owner also invested in Poland
Hansainvest Real Assets has recently inaugurated Europe’s biggest solar power plant in Saxony, Germany, boasting a capacity of 605 MW. Spanning an area of 500 hectares, the project was executed in collaboration with Shell Energy Europe through a power purchase agreement (PPA).
Presently, the facility stands as Europe’s largest operational photovoltaic project. Prior to its commissioning, the title was held by Núñez de Balboa, situated in southern Spain, with a capacity of 500 MW.
Plans to develop the largest photovoltaic farm in Europe
The farm is set to grow by an additional 45 MW by the summer of 2024 as per the outlined plans. The Witznitz project, completed by Move On Energy, was constructed in under two years. Approximately 1.1 million photovoltaic modules were installed across 500 hectares of the former Witznitz II open-pit lignite mine. Additionally, new bicycle and horse riding paths were incorporated into the project, along with the establishment of hedges surrounding the expansive power plant.
In 2023, Hansainvest Real Assets revealed an investment of around EUR 50 million in a collection of 231 planned photovoltaic farms in Poland. This capital infusion was facilitated through a loan extended to the group entity SUNfarming Polska IPP GmbH & Co. KG (“SUN IPP”). The total nominal capacity of the power plants funded by this initiative is approximately 257 MWp.
