Romina Pourmokhtari, Sweden’s Minister for Climate and Environment, officially inaugurated the largest energy storage park in the Nordic region. The initiative, led by Ingrid Capacity in collaboration with BW ESS, consists of 14 large-scale energy storage systems with a total capacity of 211 MW/211 MWh. This milestone investment represents a significant step toward Sweden’s goal of achieving a carbon-neutral energy system.

The opening ceremony for one of the 14 facilities was held in Eskilstuna.

The Role of Energy Storage in the Energy Transition

Since 2023, Ingrid Capacity and BW ESS have been working together on 14 large-scale energy storage projects strategically located within Sweden’s electricity grid in price zones SE3 and SE4. The project aims to enhance the flexibility and resilience of Sweden’s energy system, supporting the country’s competitiveness while strengthening the grid in both the short and long term.

“Sweden faces increasing electricity demand, which must be addressed by expanding carbon-free energy production, strengthening energy grids, and improving energy storage capabilities. It is an honor to inaugurate the largest energy storage investment in the Nordic region. Thanks to the efforts of Ingrid Capacity and BW ESS, we are reducing grid congestion and enabling increased energy production. Achieving our climate goals and enhancing competitiveness requires access to more affordable carbon-free energy, which is vital for our electrification and climate transition,” said Romina Pourmokhtari.

“The construction of this historic portfolio is a significant milestone achieved by Ingrid Capacity in collaboration with BW ESS. Flexible solutions such as large-scale energy storage have proven cost-effective and scalable, reducing societal costs while enabling industrial development and electrification. This is crucial for Sweden’s future competitiveness and green transition. We are proud to contribute while reaffirming our ambition to become a leading flexibility provider in Europe,” added Axel Holmberg, CEO of Ingrid Capacity.

Ingrid Capacity’s Path Toward European Leadership in Energy Flexibility

Ingrid Capacity plans to build an additional 13 energy storage facilities in Sweden by the end of 2024, with a total capacity of 196 MW/196 MWh. By the second half of 2025, the company aims to have over 400 MW/400 MWh of flexible resources in the Swedish electricity grid. This capacity would be sufficient to meet the energy demand of a city the size of Malmö for about an hour on a typical winter day.
