Harmony Energy is ready to build BESS storage facilities in France, Germany and Poland.
The British company, which owns and operates most battery‑based energy‑storage systems in the United Kingdom, has announced its plans to further expand BESS technology in other European countries – including Poland. It is the owner of Europe’s largest Bumpers Battery Energy Storage System, with 99 MW of power and 198 MWh of capacity.
“We are entering the French market, but we are also looking at investment opportunities in Germany and Poland,” said Paul Mason, Chief Investment Officer at Harmony Energy, during the panel Highlighting the Investors’ Current Appetite for Energy Storage.
“We are now at a point where we have a really good plan prepared, and it is ready to be implemented in all of these countries,” Mason added.
A setback in Poland’s BESS capacity‑market auction
This is not the first time Harmony Energy has shown interest in Poland. At the end of last year, the Polish branch of the company declared its intention to submit bids for 500 MW of BESS projects in Poland’s capacity‑market auction. Ultimately, however, it was the Greenvolt Group that emerged as the major winner, securing nearly 70% of the total capacity available for BESS technology. Still, this did not discourage the British company.
Speaking about Harmony’s approach to investing in new countries, Mason added: “It is important to have local contacts in a given area and partners who understand development, with whom you can jointly align processes, systems and ways of designing specific BESS solutions.”
It is expected that by 2030 the United Kingdom will increase its energy‑storage capacity fivefold. According to the European Association for Storage of Energy, in 2022 alone the UK added more large‑scale storage capacity than any other country.
“France, Germany, Poland see what is happening in the UK and say: ‘Great, batteries work! Let’s take advantage of this, adjust the regulations and enable them here.” – argues Peter Kavanagh, CEO of Harmony Energy, optimistically summarizing the company’s plans.
