German-Danish-Australian Alliance. A Giant Energy Storage Project to Be Built in Baden-Württemberg
Copenhagen Energy and Akaysha Energy Join Forces on 500 MW / 2 GWh Battery Project in Germany
Danish company Copenhagen Energy and Australian developer Akaysha Energy have teamed up to deliver one of the largest energy storage projects in Germany. The partners plan to build a large four-hour battery system with a capacity of 500 MW and 2 GWh. The project will be located in Bühl, near Baden-Baden, and was officially presented to the local city council last week.
Strategic Location and Regional Benefits
The site selection was deliberate. The plot is located in close proximity to high-voltage infrastructure and an existing power substation. According to municipal authorities in Bühl, this minimizes land use requirements and improves grid integration efficiency.
A large industrial zone is also located nearby. Local officials expect the project to provide a strong boost to the regional economy, generate stable tax revenues, and significantly enhance the security and reliability of renewable electricity supply in the area.
Australian Expertise Enters the European Market
The joint venture combines complementary strengths. Copenhagen Energy contributes extensive experience in renewable project development and electricity trading, while Akaysha Energy brings expertise as a leading Australian battery storage developer and operator.
The partnership has already secured strong financial backing. A consortium of international banks—including Deutsche Bank, BNP Paribas, and ING Group—has provided a credit facility worth €184 million.
Akaysha Energy plans to introduce its proven Australian contracting models to the German market, particularly advanced flexibility services such as virtual pricing structures and profit-sharing agreements. According to Paul Curnow, Chief Commercial Officer at Akaysha Energy, these structured financial products are designed to first assess customer needs and risk, and then align technology deployment to ensure long-term bankability.
Expansion Plans in Germany
The company’s ambitions in Germany are significant. Beyond Baden-Württemberg, Akaysha Energy already has a secured project pipeline totaling 2.6 GW. Additional storage projects are planned in Schleswig-Holstein, Lower Saxony, and Brandenburg, marking a broader expansion across the German energy storage market.
