Alpiq is acquiring 90% of shares in Harmony Energy. The Swiss giant is entering the Polish BESS market.
The Swiss energy producer and service provider Alpiq has finalized an agreement to acquire 90% of shares in the British company Harmony Energy – one of Europe’s leading developers and operators of large‑scale energy‑storage systems. The transaction aims to radically strengthen the Swiss company’s position in the energy‑flexibility market and place it among the top European players in the BESS sector.
A multibillion‑euro project portfolio and expansion across Europe
Although the financial details of the transaction have not been made public, it is one of the most significant events of the year for the M&A market in the renewable‑energy sector. Thanks to this acquisition, Alpiq gains immediate access to an advanced development platform and a massive portfolio of more than 12 GW of projects across key European markets.
Approximately 400 MW of projects currently under construction will come under the direct control of the Swiss company. One of them, located in the United Kingdom, is expected to be connected to the electricity grid later this quarter (Q3 2026). The acquired assets and secured development pipeline will allow Alpiq to pursue its long‑term goal of building and operating a multi‑gigawatt portfolio of BESS systems throughout Europe.
Harmony Energy will retain its brand and independence
Founded in 2010, Harmony Energy has grown into one of the most dynamic players in the large‑scale battery segment. To date, the company has successfully commissioned 18 grid‑scale projects with a combined capacity exceeding 700 MW. Its operational and development activities focus on the following markets:
- the United Kingdom,
- Germany,
- France,
- Poland.
Importantly, from a corporate‑structure perspective, once the transaction is fully completed, Harmony Energy will continue to operate as an independent company and develop its existing projects under its own well‑recognized brand.
A logical continuation of successful cooperation
The announced investment is not accidental – it is a continuation of the close business relationship between the two companies. Alpiq and Harmony Energy have previously cooperated on portfolio transactions. The Swiss company purchased two completed battery‑storage projects from the British developer, including the flagship and widely discussed 100 MW Cheviré installation in France.
The acquisition fits perfectly into the trend observed across Europe, where traditional energy producers and operators of pumped‑storage power plants (a specialty of Alpiq) are increasingly acquiring battery assets to better balance the variable generation from wind and solar farms. For the Polish market, the presence of such a financially strong duo may significantly accelerate the implementation of Harmony’s planned energy‑storage projects along the Vistula.
