SES Hydrogen Energy has successfully conducted functional tests on a prototype of a 0.5 megawatt (MW) hydrogen-oxygen boiler, replicating real-world operational conditions. The goal is to have this device ready for commercial deployment by the transition of 2024 to 2025. This development marks a significant step in advancing hydrogen-based energy solutions.

SES Hydrogen Energy is a part of the Sescom Capital Group, which in 2021 ramped up its efforts in research and development within this field. The company continues its dedicated work in hydrogen-related innovations through SES Hydrogen Energy. Interestingly, the initial ideas for emission-free hydrogen boilers within Sescom were conceived as far back as 12 years ago, showcasing the company’s longstanding commitment to advancing sustainable energy solutions.

Key tests

The testing process primarily centered on assessing the functional characteristics of the burner. Additionally, the tests encompassed examining flame behavior and its specific attributes concerning designated power levels, facilitated by a thermal imaging camera.

Monika Kałdonek, the Senior Project Manager at SES Hydrogen Energy, emphasized that the functional tests successfully validated the accuracy and operational safety of the proposed solution. Months of dedicated team effort enabled these tests to be conducted under controlled conditions, closely mirroring the actual operational environment of the installation. The tests confirmed the validity of component selection, design, and conceptual principles of the hydrogen-oxygen boiler. Importantly, the safety of burning hydrogen in pure oxygen was established.

This milestone marks a pivotal achievement that will enable the enhancement of the existing test unit. The focus now shifts to refining the design and optimizing processes within the boiler. A comprehensive internal test results report has been completed, paving the way for extensive analytical assessments to summarize the conducted work. Subsequent testing will occur in an open combustion chamber, leading eventually to essential evaluations within a closed secondary circuit. Simultaneously, the certification process for the device will be initiated, underscoring the company’s dedication to advancing this innovative technology.

Worldwide innovation

The ongoing development of the hydrogen-oxygen boiler marks a significant advancement in the realm of sustainable energy solutions. It stands as a pioneering innovation not only in Europe but also as a global frontrunner. This heating device, specially engineered for industrial, system, and residential heating applications, is designed to facilitate controlled combustion of hydrogen with pure oxygen within a specifically designed combustion chamber.

Mateusz Sołtysiak, President of the Management Board at SES Hydrogen Energy, underscores the significance of the recently conducted tests. These tests, a culmination of months of dedicated design and improvement efforts, represent a crucial milestone on the path to actual implementation. The journey ahead involves optimizing the solution and progressing to tests in a closed combustion chamber, a pivotal step on the road to certification.

Sołtysiak further highlights the remarkable market interest in this emission-free hydrogen boiler technology, both within Poland and abroad. The growing demand for alternative solutions in the heating sector, driven by increasingly stringent regulations, underscores the pressing need for innovations like the hydrogen-oxygen boiler. The commitment of the first entities to invest in such technologies, such as the planned hydrogen-heated housing estate in Śrem, demonstrates a tangible shift toward more sustainable heating solutions. SES Hydrogen Energy’s involvement as a partner in the project underscores the company’s dedication to advancing emission-free heating technologies.
