A new generation of lead-acid batteries in Australia. ArcActive launches pilot project based on bipolar architecture
New Zealand-based company ArcActive has launched a pilot energy storage system using advanced lead-acid batteries. The installation is located at Deakin University’s 7.25 MW microgrid test facility in Waurn Ponds, Australia. The project is supported by Origin Zero and integrated into its virtual power plant.
Bipolar architecture and fabric electrodes
ArcActive’s innovative solution combines its proprietary fabric electrode technology with a bipolar cell design. Instead of connecting individual cells using conventional physical bridges and connectors, the new design uses a bipolar plate that forms a direct boundary between adjacent cells and conducts current vertically through the entire stack.
This compact, layered design offers several technological advantages:
- Lower internal resistance – direct current flow through the battery’s thickness ensures even current distribution across the electrode surfaces and reduces electrical losses.
- Extended lifespan – the design allows consistently high compression to be maintained throughout the structure. This supports the active material on the positive electrode, prevents it from shedding, and significantly extends cycle life.
- Safety and recyclability – the system uses well-established, widely available, and fully recyclable lead-acid battery materials.
Established procedures and greater predictability for businesses
The main objective of the pilot project conducted in partnership with Origin Zero is to remove investment barriers in the commercial and industrial sectors, including factories, warehouses, and shopping centres seeking to store low-cost solar energy.
ArcActive’s management highlights that conventional lead-acid batteries have the advantage of well-established regulations and safety standards. Insurers and building permit authorities are already thoroughly familiar with this technology. By adopting bipolar architecture, the company can offer businesses an affordable, predictable, and safe energy storage alternative for commercial properties without the need to undergo complex and costly approval procedures.
