Construction of a strategic gas compressor station begins
The construction of a new gas compressor station in Greater Poland is set to become one of the most important projects strengthening Poland’s energy security and that of the entire Central and Eastern European region. The investment, carried out by GAZ‑SYSTEM in the Lwówek municipality, will increase the capacity to transport gas from the LNG Terminal in Świnoujście and the Baltic Pipe pipeline to central, south‑eastern and eastern parts of the country. The project will also reinforce Poland’s position as a regional gas hub.
Energy security requires concrete investments
During a briefing at the construction site, Energy Minister Miłosz Motyka emphasized that energy security today requires tangible infrastructure projects rather than political declarations. He noted that thanks to investments implemented by GAZ‑SYSTEM, Poland can not only secure its own needs but also support gas supplies to neighboring countries.
The new Lwówek Gas Compressor Station is being built in Zębowo, Greater Poland Voivodeship, next to the existing Lwówek Gas Node. Completion is scheduled for the first quarter of 2028. The installation will be equipped with three compressor units with a total capacity of 24 MW, and the gas node itself will be expanded in parallel, enabling more efficient use of the national transmission infrastructure.
A key point on Poland’s gas map
The importance of the investment stems primarily from its location. The Lwówek area is one of the key points on Poland’s gas map, as strategic pipelines transporting gas from northern supply routes intersect there. These include the Goleniów–Lwówek connection, which carries gas from the LNG terminal and Baltic Pipe, as well as the Lwówek–Odolanów section, part of the North–South Gas Corridor.
The new compressor station will increase the throughput of the more than 800‑kilometer transmission route connecting northern entry points to Poland’s system with the country’s southern and western borders and domestic gas storage facilities. This means greater system flexibility, faster response in emergency situations, and more efficient gas delivery to industrial customers and households.
A project of regional importance for Central and Eastern Europe
The investment also has a geopolitical dimension. Expanding transmission infrastructure will enhance the diversification of gas supply sources not only for Poland but also for other Central and Eastern European countries. In practice, this means greater resilience to supply disruptions and further reduction of dependence on a single direction of energy imports.
Over PLN 892 million for a strategic project
The “Construction of the Lwówek Gas Compressor Station” project is co‑financed under the EU programme European Funds for Infrastructure, Climate and Environment 2021–2027. The total value of the investment exceeds PLN 892 million, of which more than PLN 559 million comes from EU funds. The project supports the development of modern and resilient energy infrastructure, strengthening the transformation of the gas market and the stability of supply in the region.
