One of the largest hybrid renewable energy projects in India is set to be developed
ReNew Energy Global Plc, a Nasdaq-listed leader in decarbonization solutions, has announced an investment worth approximately INR 22,000 crore (about USD 2.5 billion) to build one of India’s largest hybrid renewable energy (RE) projects. The venture will be located in Anantapur district, Andhra Pradesh.
Project Overview
The new complex will generate a total of 2.8 GW of capacity: 1.8 GW from solar power and 1 GW from wind energy. It will also include a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) with a capacity of 2 GWh, enabling the delivery of clean electricity for up to four hours a day during peak demand periods—when renewable generation is typically low.
“Andhra Pradesh is a region that offers exceptional opportunities to investors – favorable regulations, excellent transmission infrastructure, and strong solar and wind conditions,” said Sumant Sinha, Founder, Chairman, and CEO of ReNew. “This project supports the Prime Minister’s goal of reaching 500 GW of renewable capacity by 2030.”
Phased Execution and Domestic Component Manufacturing
The project will be implemented in stages. The first phase will consist of 587 MWp of solar capacity, 250 MW of wind capacity, and 415 MWh of storage. Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) for this portion have already been signed.
In line with the “Make in India” initiative, all solar modules will be manufactured domestically – at ReNew’s plants in Jaipur (Rajasthan) and Dholera (Gujarat). The project will also employ modern sun-tracking systems and water-free cleaning technology to enhance efficiency and reduce water use.
Government Support and Employment Boost
The foundation stone for the project was laid by Nara Lokesh, Andhra Pradesh’s Minister for Information Technology, Renewable Energy, and Human Resources.
“This project is not only a contribution to our integrated renewable energy policy but also a testament that Andhra Pradesh is reclaiming its leadership in the green energy sector,” said Minister Lokesh. “We are building not just capacity but investor confidence and global credibility.”
The investment is expected to generate around 1,500 direct and indirect jobs and contribute to the state’s ambitious renewable energy targets: 78.5 GW of solar, 35 GW of wind, and 25 GWh of energy storage.
Expanding ReNew’s Presence in Andhra Pradesh
ReNew already operates 717 MW of wind farms and 60 MW of solar installations across 10 locations in Andhra Pradesh. The new project will significantly expand its regional footprint.
At the national and global level, ReNew manages a renewable energy portfolio of 17.4 GW (as of February 2025), making it one of the world’s largest renewable energy firms and the biggest player in India after Adani Green.
