The first electricity from the offshore wind farm “Saint-Brieuc” by Iberdrola in France

The first green megawatts produced in the Saint-Brieuc offshore wind farm, owned by Iberdrola, have been transferred to the French national energy grid by RTE. This is Iberdrola’s first project in France and the second of its kind in France powering the national energy system.

After the testing phase, the first electric energy from the wind farm was sent to the grid under the supervision of Iberdrola’s maritime coordination center based in Kerantour (Côtes d’Armor).

Saint-Brieuc and the fight against climate change

The wind farm’s production will increase after the installation and commissioning of 62 wind turbines in the coming months.

“We are very proud to start producing clean energy from the first offshore wind turbines. This is a breakthrough moment after 12 years of hard work on the realization of this large-scale project, which will contribute to both the energy security of the Brittany region and the energy transformation, a key element in the fight against climate change,” said Emmanuel Rollin, CEO of Iberdrola France.

Renewable and emission-free electric energy is generated in Côtes-d’Armor in Brittany.

The produced energy is received by the offshore electrical substation located at the center of the wind farm. It is then transported through two underwater export cables with a voltage of 225 kV installed by RTE (Réseau de Transport d’Électricité) to the Caroual beach in Erquy. The energy is then introduced into the grid through the Doberie substation located in Hénansal (Côtes-d’Armor).

Energy security for Brittany The Saint-Brieuc wind farm will produce approximately 1820 GWh annually, which corresponds to the annual electricity consumption (including heating) of 835,000 residents. This represents about 9% of the total electricity consumption in Brittany.

After the complete installation is put into use, the Côtes-d’Armor region (600,000 residents) will produce more energy than it consumes for its own needs. The Saint-Brieuc offshore wind farm increases the energy security of Brittany while contributing to the achievement of the goals of the Multi-Year Energy Program (PPE).
