ORLEN has unveiled its Sustainable Development Strategy for the period 2024-2030. This comprehensive strategy encompasses various initiatives, including the Just Transition Program, specifically tailored to support communities in regions undergoing transformation. The document delineates the organization’s approach and objectives regarding the reduction of climate impact, environmental protection, improvement of working conditions, collaboration with local communities, and the practice of responsible management.

The ORLEN Group aims to bolster its competitiveness, mitigate business risks, and create long-term value for shareholders through the implementation of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles.

Daniel Obajtek, President of the Management Board of ORLEN, emphasizes that sustainable development is a rewarding endeavor, positioning the company as a regional leader in this domain. The adoption and execution of a comprehensive strategy in sustainable development serve as a testament to ORLEN’s reliability and solidity for investors while providing avenues for further growth. Responsible actions also enhance the company’s ability to secure financing for strategic projects, particularly in the realm of renewable energy. This strategic approach aims to fortify ORLEN’s market position, with the ambitious goal of becoming an emission-neutral company by 2050.

The Sustainable Development Strategy for 2024-2030 by the ORLEN Group addresses contemporary market and regulatory challenges, focusing on climate change, biodiversity protection, social relations, and geopolitical and economic factors. The strategy is structured around five key pillars, aligning with the UN Sustainable Development Goals and adhering to the reporting standards of the EU ESRS. This framework not only facilitates a comprehensive approach to responsible business practices but also ensures detailed and transparent reporting on sustainable development issues in accordance with directives such as the CSRD.

Climate

The ORLEN Group has committed to a substantial reduction in emissions by 25% in the refinery, petrochemical, and mining segments by the year 2030, in comparison to the 2019 levels. Additionally, there is a targeted 40% reduction in the intensity of CO2 emissions in the energy sector. Furthermore, a 15% decrease is planned in the NCI emission intensity factor related to the total energy sold by the ORLEN Group.

To achieve these goals, the company is expediting investments in zero- and low-emission generation sources, which includes the establishment of the first offshore wind farm boasting a capacity of 1.2 GW. The strategy also involves enhancing the efficiency of existing assets and investing in the development of infrastructure for capturing and transporting carbon dioxide. These initiatives underscore ORLEN’s commitment to fostering sustainability and reducing its environmental impact.

Environment

The ORLEN Group is set to develop a comprehensive action plan dedicated to safeguarding biodiversity in the areas of its operations. Simultaneously, the company will implement a standardized policy for sustainable water and sewage management across the entire Group. The company is actively integrating circular economy principles into its practices, exemplified by the “Blue Bridge” project. This initiative focuses on treating sewage from the Wodociągi Płockie sewage treatment plant to a quality aligning with process water parameters, enabling its reuse at the ORLEN Production Plant in Płock. This innovative approach is expected to reduce the reliance on Vistula water by approximately 25% in specific technological processes.

Furthermore, the ORLEN Group will construct a thermal processing installation for hazardous waste (ITPON), targeting a capacity of at least 50,000 tons per year. This facility will play a pivotal role in addressing the disposal of hazardous substances in Poland. The company is also committed to enhancing the environmental sustainability of car washes at ORLEN stations. By 2030, there are plans to reduce water consumption by 30-60% and decrease chemical usage by 20%. These initiatives underscore ORLEN’s dedication to environmental responsibility and sustainable practices.

Society

A pivotal initiative on the horizon for the company, in alignment with its strategy, is the implementation of the Just Transition Program. This program is designed to address the social needs of residents in regions undergoing the transition from high-emission to low- and zero-emission economies.

Management

ORLEN, as part of its corporate governance policy, places a strong emphasis on maintaining transparent relations with key stakeholders. In the upcoming years, the company plans to undertake initiatives that facilitate the implementation of due diligence across the entire value chain of the ORLEN Group. This aims to ensure that partners, suppliers, and other stakeholders align with the principles of sustainable development. The company will also intensify efforts in developing a central cybersecurity management model within the ORLEN Group. Additionally, ensuring compliance with human rights across the value chain and promoting social cohesion and equality will be overarching goals for the company.
