Germany’s energy storage market has reached a new benchmark. Eco Stor has completed financial close for a battery energy storage project with a capacity of 300 MW and 718 MWh, to be built in Förderstedt. It is described as the largest BESS project in Germany ever approved and financed in terms of both scale and value. Debt financing for the project was provided by a banking consortium including Banco Santander and NORD/LB.

Private capital as the foundation of financing

A key business aspect of the project is that the financing was secured entirely without public subsidies or government support. Revenue streams and financial stability are backed by a long-term flexibility services agreement signed with Next Kraftwerke, one of Europe’s largest virtual power plant operators.

Eco Stor CFO Jörn Rohland emphasized that this milestone demonstrates the growing maturity of the market and its ability to finance critical storage infrastructure purely through private investment and commercial bank debt. He also noted that large-scale storage assets play a crucial role in stabilizing the power grid, integrating rapidly expanding renewable energy capacity, and ensuring overall energy security.

The facility, located in the state of Saxony-Anhalt, will have roughly three times the capacity of Eco Stor’s existing flagship project in Bollingstedt. Commissioning is scheduled for 2027.

Success of the commercial investment model

International law firms were involved in structuring and advising on the transaction. Clifford Chance advised the lending consortium, while Hogan Lovells represented Eco Stor.

The Förderstedt project was first announced by Eco Stor in 2024. Its earlier Bollingstedt installation, also built without public funding, helped establish Eco Stor as one of Germany’s leading independent energy storage developers.
