Will a nuclear power plant be built in the Konin municipality?
Polska Grupa Energetyczna is preparing for talks with the government regarding the company’s involvement in the planned nuclear power plant project in the Konin municipality, PGE President Dariusz Marzec said during a Friday press conference.
What stage is the Pątnów nuclear power plant project at?
Let us recall that on 31 October 2022, the presidents of three companies — PGE, ZE PAK and Korean Hydro Nuclear Power (KHNP) — signed a letter of intent whose main purpose was to develop a plan for the construction of a nuclear power plant in Konin–Pątnów based on APR1400 technology. A few months later, a special‑purpose company, PGE PAK Energia Jądrowa S.A., was established, with ZE PAK and PGE each holding a 50% stake.
In mid‑August, an application for issuing a Fundamental Decision was submitted to the Ministry of Climate and Environment. At the end of November 2023, the Minister of Climate and Environment, Anna Moskwa, issued the Fundamental Decision concerning the construction of Poland’s second nuclear power plant. It confirms that the project is consistent with the public interest, particularly with the objectives of state energy policy.
In February 2024, a meeting took place in Konin between representatives of KHNP and local authorities. It was part of the preparations for the construction of the nuclear power plant in Konin–Pątnów.
Friday’s PGE press conference
On Friday, the PGE Group held a press conference during which the nuclear power plant project was discussed. According to the information provided, a feasibility study for the investment is currently being prepared. Its purpose is to determine whether the project is justified and whether it can be located at the proposed site.
According to the assumptions, the power plant is to consist of two APR1400 reactors with a total capacity of 2.8 GW. It is planned to be commissioned in 2035 in an area adjacent to the existing ZE PAK Group power plant.
Dariusz Marzec emphasizes that the investment is still at an early stage and requires broad dialogue with the government: “It is worth having such a conversation, knowing what the implementation of this project would entail: whether this location is appropriate and how it would fit into the overall power system.”
