Shell Energy Europe with a Very Interesting Agreement, Featuring a High-Capacity Energy Storage System
BW ESS and its Partner Penso Power Sign First Long-Term Tolling Agreement for a Single Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in the UK with Shell Energy Europe
This marks the first agreement of its kind in the UK.
Tolling Agreements to Unlock Energy Storage Market in Europe?
A tolling agreement is a specific type of contract primarily found in manufacturing industries such as automotive, aerospace, or mass production. It involves at least two parties, where the principal, who owns fixed assets (properties, equipment, etc.), makes them available to the other party to perform a specific task.
In this case, the energy storage operator has signed a seven-year tolling agreement with Shell Energy Europe Limited for an energy storage facility currently under construction in Hampshire, UK. This is the first such contract for BESS assets in the UK, creating a template for a new revenue structure in the sector. According to experts, it could unlock the potential of energy storage systems across Europe.
Bramley Energy Storage
The Bramley facility will have a capacity of 100 MW / 330 MWh. It is a pioneering project in Europe utilizing Sungrow’s PowerTitan 2.0 liquid-cooled BESS. This system integrates a 2.5 MW power conversion system with built-in string inverters and a 5 MWh battery in a single container. This compact design enabled BW ESS and Penso Power to develop the 330 MWh project on a relatively small footprint.
Bramley is expected to become the longest-operating BESS facility in the UK, helping store energy from various sources (wind and solar). The facility is scheduled to begin operations in the fourth quarter of this year.
Erik Strømsø, CEO of BW ESS, commented on the agreement:
“We are excited to collaborate with the highly experienced energy trading team at Shell (…) This tolling agreement, which has been in preparation for some time, demonstrates the appeal of longer-duration, higher-performance battery systems.”
