Czech technology company Second Foundation has joined BLEnergy and Shamir Energy in developing one of the largest standalone energy storage facilities in Lithuania. The partners have signed an optimization agreement for the planned 140 MW facility in Alytus, south of Kaunas.

Timeline and costs

The project is scheduled to be commissioned in 2027. The Alytus energy storage facility is expected to begin commercial operations in the third quarter of that year. The company said the investment would cost approximately €60 million.

An unconventional agreement structure

Instead of a standard optimization contract, the parties opted for a floor agreement—a revenue protection mechanism that guarantees a minimum return while allowing them to benefit from higher profits when market conditions permit. This type of agreement is becoming increasingly popular in the European energy storage market.

The Alytus project combines the operational and commercial capabilities of the three partners. BLEnergy and Shamir Energy bring project development and asset management expertise, while Second Foundation will be responsible for algorithmic optimization of the facility’s operations and will contribute its experience in monetizing energy across power and ancillary services markets.

Who are the project partners?

BLEnergy, an Israeli energy storage developer owned by the Blilious Group, has a project portfolio exceeding 7 GWh, spanning both the Israeli market and several European countries. The company also has additional facilities at various stages of planning, construction, or operation. BLEnergy’s energy storage systems use CATL technology.

Shamir Energy, also based in Israel, develops renewable energy projects. Its portfolio includes approximately 410 MW of photovoltaic projects and 2 GWh of energy storage capacity.

Second Foundation operates in nine locations, from the United States to Japan. The company employs more than 500 analysts, engineers, data specialists, and technology experts who manage over 3 GW of renewable energy capacity. According to company data, 600 MW of energy storage capacity managed by Second Foundation is currently under construction.
