Germany breaks the record for the share of RES in electricity consumption

Reuters reports that renewable energy sources contributed to 52.3% of Germany’s overall electricity consumption during the initial six months of this year. This statistic represents an increase of around 3.1% compared to the previous year.

According to reports from BDEW (a German business association within the energy sector) and ZSW (the Centre for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research), the corresponding percentage stood at 49.2% in the preceding year.

Reasons for growth

The rising proportion of renewable energy within the energy consumption mix can be attributed to the continuous growth of wind energy in Germany. The country is consistently dedicating resources to expanding both onshore and offshore wind infrastructure. Additionally, the adoption of rooftop photovoltaic (PV) systems in households has significantly contributed to this progress. Analysts project that the number of installed PV installations in 2023 will surpass that of 2022 by more than twofold.

The implementation of the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG) has played a pivotal role in this advancement. This legislation serves as a mechanism to provide financial incentives for investors in the renewable energy sector. It establishes fixed feed-in tariffs for energy producers, ensuring consistent and appealing returns on investments. This strategy stimulates the growth of energy farms.

Furthermore, the German government’s investments in smart grid technology, innovative storage solutions, and demand response systems have been instrumental. These initiatives are aimed at enhancing grid flexibility, enabling efficient energy management, and ensuring a reliable power supply for the public.

Goals for the coming years

Germany’s ambitious target for 2030 is to elevate the renewable energy share in its electricity consumption to 80%. The nation’s rapid progress in developing this sector suggests a strong likelihood of achieving this objective. By doing so, Germany is poised to establish itself as a global frontrunner in the realm of renewable energy.
