Tesla Inc., the American electric vehicle giant, recorded a breakthrough year in the energy storage sector. The total deployment capacity reached 31.4 GWh, more than doubling the previous record from 2023, when the company delivered 14.7 GWh.

Historic Growth in Q4 2024

In the fourth quarter of 2024 alone, Tesla deployed 11.0 GWh of energy storage systems, marking a year-over-year increase of 244%. This remarkable growth resulted from the full operation of the Megapack factory in Lathrop, California, where Tesla produces its flagship energy storage systems for industrial-scale projects.

New Megafactory in Shanghai – The Start of Global Expansion

Tesla is also expanding globally in the energy storage sector by initiating pilot production of Megapack batteries at its new Megafactory in Shanghai. The company informed China’s Xinhua News Agency that mass operations are scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2025.

The Shanghai Megafactory, the second of its kind in China, will have an annual production capacity of 10,000 units, translating to 40 GWh of energy storage.

Construction of this factory, covering 200,000 square meters, was completed in a record time of seven months. This achievement was made possible through collaboration between Tesla and Chinese partners, who supported the project with infrastructure and expertise. The total investment amounted to 1.45 billion yuan (approximately 201.7 million USD).

The Shanghai factory is Tesla’s first Megapack facility outside the United States, highlighting the importance of US-China collaboration in addressing global climate challenges. According to Wu Qisheng from the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, the project demonstrates Tesla’s confidence in China’s manufacturing potential and strengthens economic ties between the two nations.

During the factory’s opening ceremony, Tesla signed contracts for its first Megapack orders in China. Tao Lin, Tesla’s Vice President, praised the Chinese renewable energy industry for its comprehensive supply chain, enormous market potential, and business-friendly environment.

Impact of Competition on Pricing and Production

While Tesla continues to scale its production capacity, it has also been forced to lower prices to sustain demand for its products. In 2024, CATL, one of Tesla’s main battery cell suppliers, launched its own energy storage system directly competing with the Megapack. This move could influence Tesla’s market share in the energy storage sector in 2025.
