U.S. Department of the Interior Announces Major Solar Projects on Public Lands
The U.S. Department of the Interior has announced that the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is advancing nine solar energy projects on public lands. These projects are expected to add a combined 6 GW of generating capacity to the grid, potentially meeting the energy needs of approximately 2 million households in the United States.

The Esmerelda 7 Project in Nevada
BLM oversees more than 245 million acres of public lands, primarily located in 12 western states, including Alaska. To date, the agency has approved clean energy projects totaling 25 GW of capacity, sufficient to power around 12 million homes. These initiatives include solar, wind, and geothermal energy developments, as well as transmission lines required to connect these facilities to the grid.

Currently, BLM is focused on the Esmerelda 7 photovoltaic project, one of the largest solar ventures in the world. This project comprises seven solar power plants near Tonopah, Nevada, spanning 118,000 acres of BLM-managed land. The agency has initiated a 45-day public consultation period to assess the project’s environmental impact. If fully approved, Esmerelda 7 would add 5.35 GW to the U.S. renewable energy portfolio, enough to power approximately 1.6 million homes.

The project also includes energy storage systems with a capacity of 700 MW and a 24-mile transmission line. The development is planned for implementation in Nevada’s Mineral and Lyon counties.

Other Initiatives by BLM
Alongside the Esmerelda 7 consultations, BLM has launched consultations for another project, Elisabeth Solar, near Dateland, Arizona. This project aims to add 270 MW of solar power and 300 MW of battery energy storage capacity to the grid.

Currently, BLM is also managing about 70 smaller utility-scale clean energy projects, collectively capable of generating nearly 32 GW of renewable energy. Additionally, the agency is reviewing 166 applications for solar and wind energy development and over 40 proposals for locating renewable energy farms.
