Will Honda dethrone Tesla?

Elon Musk and Tesla Inc. remain at the forefront of the electric vehicle (EV) revolution, but their position as leaders in this field might face a challenge from Honda’s intensive development of URFC technology.

What is URFC technology?

A unified regenerative fuel cell (URFC) is essentially a type of proton exchange membrane fuel cell. It has a dual functionality, operating in two modes. First, it can carry out water electrolysis in a regenerative mode. Second, it can function as a typical fuel cell, producing electricity by using oxygen and hydrogen.

This technology has the potential to make vehicles more cost-effective, enhance their durability, and increase their range. Additionally, refueling these vehicles would become significantly quicker than the conventional methods.

Will Honda take over the leadership seat?

Experts predict that by 2030, URFC technology could surpass traditional electric vehicles, potentially leading to Honda’s dominance in the market. Honda has prioritized the development of this technology for several years, and it plans to introduce a fuel cell vehicle based on the CR-V SUV in 2024. This model will feature a standard battery, as opposed to a hydrogen tank used in URFC technology.

Tesla problems?

In mid-October of this year, the price of Tesla shares experienced a significant decline, dropping more than 15% to reach $211.99 per share. This drop was primarily attributed to an announcement made by Elon Musk during the presentation of the third-quarter results midweek. Musk expressed a pessimistic outlook on macroeconomic factors and indicated that cost reductions and price adjustments would be required at Tesla in the near future.
