Swiss energy company MET Group has inaugurated the largest stand-alone electricity storage system in Hungary’s history.
The new installation, located at the Dunamenti power plant in Százhalombatta near Budapest, has a rated power output of 40 MW and an energy storage capacity of 80 MWh.

Modern Technology and Local Collaboration
The technology for the new system was supplied by Huawei Technologies, while the main contractor was the Hungarian company Forest-Vill Ltd. MET Group emphasizes that the combined capacity of all BESS units at the Dunamenti site would be enough to power all decorative and public lighting in Budapest for four continuous hours.

“Energy storage systems are a key element of the energy transition, as they allow for a greater share of renewables in the energy mix and help stabilize the grid,” said Péter Horváth, CEO of Dunamenti Erőmű Zrt., during the official inauguration.

What Do Industry Institutions Say?
The project has also received strong approval from industry authorities. Péter Kaderják, president of the Hungarian Energy Storage Association, emphasized that such investments are essential for the national green transition strategy:

“We must strive to make the widest possible use of renewable energy sources in Hungary, using technologies that are already proven and cost-effective. The energy transition is a priority in Hungarian energy policy,” said Kaderják.

Who Is MET Group?
MET Group is an integrated European energy company headquartered in Switzerland. It operates in 17 countries, across 32 national gas markets and 44 international energy trading hubs. The company employs over 1,100 people from nearly 60 different nationalities.

In 2024, MET Group reported €17.9 billion in sales revenue, with gas trading volumes reaching 140 billion cubic meters and 76 TWh of electricity.

Strategic Growth in Europe
The investment in Százhalombatta is part of MET Group’s broader strategy in Europe. Notably, in 2022, the company launched a pilot system at the same location using Tesla Megapack 2 batteries with 4 MW power and 8 MWh capacity.

In 2024, MET Group acquired Comax, a French operator and developer of energy storage systems, significantly expanding its capabilities in this area. The company is also developing co-located projects, combining energy storage systems with solar farms in several European countries. This approach improves energy efficiency and helps better manage the variable and unpredictable nature of renewable energy production.
