The energy storage system will replace the last coal mine in Hawaii

A new energy storage system is being built where a coal mine used to be. This system can store a lot of energy, about 565 MWh worth. This is happening in the same area where a coal-fired power station from AES Corporation used to produce electricity. That power station used to provide around 20% of the electricity for Oahu’s island.

Hawaii is making a great effort by joining 10 other states that have stopped using coal for making electricity. They’re turning an old coal mine into something new. This big area, almost 9 acres, is being left natural. They’re also planning to use it for storing energy, and they might even put up solar panels and wind turbines to make more power.

The energy storage system they’re building can hold a lot of energy, like 565 MWh. This helps because Hawaii wants to use more clean energy, like from the sun and wind. This way, the company that manages the electricity can do it better.

Right now, most of Hawaii’s power comes from oil, but they’re getting better. About 32% of the power they made in 2022 came from things like the sun and wind.

Hawaii has had a tough time with climate change. The coral reefs are getting worse, the oceans are getting warmer, and there are more droughts and strong storms.

In 2020, Hawaii decided they won’t use coal for making electricity anymore. Back in 2001, there were around 1,100 coal power plants in the U.S., but more than half of them are gone now. Some switched to natural gas instead of coal.

Hawaii’s big goal is to use only clean energy by 2045. They’re the first state in the U.S. to aim for this. The whole country is starting to like clean energy more too. You can see this from the things the Biden administration is deciding, like helping renewable energy in rural places.
