Poland’s largest energy storage facility is entering the final stretch
Polska Grupa Energetyczna is approaching the grand finale of constructing a gigantic energy storage facility in Żarnowiec, Pomerania. The project, boasting an impressive power rating of 262 MW and a capacity of 981 MWh, has entered a critical phase of implementation following the successful delivery and installation of the heart of the entire system – a 260‑ton power transformer.
A complex logistical operation from South Korea
Delivering such a massive component required a monumental logistical effort from PGE. The 260‑ton transformer travelled from South Korea to Poland using three different modes of transport: maritime, river, and road (via specialised low‑bed heavy‑haul trailers).
Once installed, this giant’s task will be to step up the output voltage from 30 kV to 400 kV. This crucial step will enable lossless and ultra‑fast energy exchange, as well as direct cooperation between the storage facility and the National Power System.
Commissioning phase begins
Krzysztof Müller, CEO of PGE Energia Odnawialna, confirmed that construction of the installation in the Pomeranian Voivodeship is entering its decisive stage, with commissioning procedures set to begin shortly. On the construction site:
- Over 150 DC‑Link units (responsible for managing direct current) have already been installed.
- In the coming days, assembly of the high‑voltage switchgear will begin.
The general contractor for the project, whose official construction start took place in September last year, is a consortium including the global technology leader LG Energy Solution.
