In the shadow of controversy, Biden gave the green light to the largest offshore wind farm in the US

Under the leadership of President Biden’s administration, a groundbreaking offshore wind farm project has received approval for construction off the coast of New Jersey. Anticipated to be a significant contributor to renewable energy, this project is projected to generate ample power to meet the energy needs of approximately 500,000 households.

The Ocean Wind 1 project, developed by Danish energy firm Ørsted, is set to be constructed roughly 15 miles off the coast of New Jersey. This ambitious endeavor aims to produce a substantial 1,100 megawatt-hours (MWh) of electricity, which is sufficient to provide power for around half a million households.

Comprising a total of 98 turbines, this offshore wind farm is on track to be operational as early as 2025.

Controversies around wind energy

Lobbyists associated with the Republican party have been actively engaged in a recent campaign aimed at impeding the progress of the wind energy sector within the United States.

During the period since December, a distressing count of 30 deceased whales have washed ashore along the Atlantic coast. Republicans and representatives from fossil fuel companies have asserted that these occurrences are linked to the expansion of offshore wind energy initiatives.

However, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the federal agency responsible for marine research, has stated that there is currently no substantiated evidence implicating wind farms in these fish fatalities. The agency underscores that the primary threats to whales are posed by ships and fishing equipment.

In addition to the opposition expressed by Republican members in Congress, the offshore wind sector has also spurred numerous local nonprofit organizations to voice concerns about the potential harm to whales caused by the energy industry’s developments.

Offshore wind energy will be a pillar of the USA?

President Biden has recognized offshore wind as a pivotal renewable energy solution to achieve the United States’ climate objectives. The administration has set an ambitious target of establishing 30 gigawatts (GW) of offshore wind capacity by the year 2030.

Notably, Ocean Wind 1 represents the third approved project of this nature endorsed by the Biden administration. Preceding ventures include the Vineyard Wind project situated off the Massachusetts coast, as well as the South Fork Wind project located to the east of Long Island, New York.
