Greenvolt Group, through its subsidiary Greenvolt Power, has been among the winners of Italy’s historic first auction for large-scale battery energy storage. The transmission system operator TERNA awarded the company a 15-year CPI-indexed contract for a battery project with 75 MW of power and 600 MWh of capacity, located in the South and Calabria regions.

Record competition and a significant win

The auction was held under the MACSE (Electric Storage Procurement Mechanism) framework and immediately demonstrated enormous investor interest — demand exceeded supply by more than four times. Out of over 40 GWh of proposed capacity, only 10 GWh of storage projects were awarded, which are expected to come online by 2028. In Calabria and southern Italy, only three developers were selected to move forward.

Greenvolt’s project is the group’s first eight-hour Li-Ion battery solution, making it one of the largest planned long-duration energy storage systems in Europe.

“We are very pleased with the results of the Italian auction, achieved in such a highly competitive environment. Batteries — a sector in which Greenvolt is among Europe’s leading players — are key to ensuring grid stability amid the rapid expansion of renewable energy sources. At the same time, this 15-year contract represents a clear strengthening of our operations in the Italian market,” said João Manso Neto, CEO of Greenvolt Group.

MACSE auctions – a pillar of Italy’s energy transition

The MACSE auction is the first of three rounds planned through 2028. Their collective goal is to reach 70 GWh of storage capacity by 2030 — one of the pillars of Italy’s energy transition and a key enabler for the further integration of renewable energy into the national energy mix.
