Germany Launches Europe’s Largest E-Fuel Plant
German Company INERATEC Launches ERA ONE – Europe’s Largest E-Fuel Production Plant
German firm INERATEC has officially launched ERA ONE, the largest Power-to-Liquid e-fuel production facility in Europe. Located in the industrial heart of Frankfurt, the plant is designed to produce up to 2,500 tons of climate-neutral synthetic fuels annually. This marks the first instance in the EU where e-fuels will be available in commercial quantities.
Toward Climate Neutrality
The opening of ERA ONE on June 3, 2025, represents both a symbolic and practical step toward achieving the EU’s climate goals for 2030 and 2050. The plant utilizes two locally sourced feedstocks: green hydrogen, a by-product of chlorine production, and biogenic CO₂, sourced from a nearby biogas facility. The result is synthetic crude oil, further processed into e-diesel, sustainable aviation fuel (e-SAF), and e-chemicals.
Importantly, the e-fuels produced by INERATEC are fully “drop-in ready”, meaning they can be used in existing engines without any modifications. This is a crucial advantage, particularly for sectors like aviation and maritime transport, where full electrification is currently not feasible.
Modularity and Scalability
ERA ONE also showcases an innovative approach to plant construction and scalability. Its modular design allows for the rapid deployment of additional installations both in Germany and abroad. INERATEC plans to significantly scale up production by 2030, aligning with EU regulations like ReFuelEU Aviation, which require airlines to incorporate a share of sustainable fuels in their energy mix. “With ERA ONE, we offer a real solution for hard-to-electrify sectors. We’re replacing fossil molecules with green ones,” said Tim Böltken, INERATEC’s co-founder and CEO.
Funding a Strategic Project
ERA ONE was made possible through strong financial and political support. The total investment exceeds €70 million, including:
- €40 million in venture debt from the European Investment Bank (EIB),
- €30 million in non-repayable grants from the Breakthrough Energy Catalyst fund, supported by Bill Gates.
Additional support came from the German Ministry of the Environment via its Environmental Innovation Program. Private investors include global venture capital firms such as Samsung Ventures, Honda, ENGIE New Ventures, and Safran Corporate Ventures. “This investment combines advanced technology, environmental responsibility, and high-quality industrial development,” noted Hesse’s Minister of Economic Affairs, Kaweh Mansoori.
A Lesson in Engineering Boldness and Flexibility
The construction of ERA ONE was far from a standard project. As Christina Braumüller, project lead and INERATEC pioneer, explained: “This was the largest project in the company’s history—both in scale and engineering complexity.” The process involved removing contaminated soil down to 8 meters, collaborating with major construction firms and industrial suppliers, and simultaneously building and launching the first production modules. The project embraced a flexible design strategy, pre-approving general technical parameters while allowing room for later regulatory-compliant adjustments.
The success of ERA ONE is seen as a blueprint INERATEC now aims to replicate across Europe and globally. As Arnd Pannenbecker, one of the project’s technology partners, stated: “We have a product that works. Now we can scale it and deploy it in new locations.”
