Bernard Swoczyna: Without energy storage, the transformation will be incomplete!

Published: Estimated reading time: 4 minutes

In the inaugural episode of the E-Magazyny Podcast series on energy storage, we feature Bernard Swoczyna, the principal expert in the “Energy and Climate” program at the Instrat Foundation. Join us for an engaging conversation and gain valuable insights into the world of energy storage.

In our discussion, Bernard highlights a crucial aspect: the imminent necessity of energy storage in the years to come. He argues that without energy storage, the ongoing energy transformation will be left incomplete. As the production of energy from renewable sources like the sun and wind continues to escalate, there will reach a juncture where we cannot efficiently capture all the generated energy. Bernard points out that constructing additional energy storage facilities won’t be economically viable unless energy storage is widely implemented. Moreover, he stresses that without such storage solutions, achieving the decarbonization of transport—a pivotal goal—will remain unattainable.

Bernard Swoczyna: Without energy storage, the transformation will be incomplete!

“A few months ago, a forecast scenario for the Polish Energy Policy until 2040 was released. According to this projection, by 2040, we may witness the emergence of 11 GW of energy storage capacity and corresponding technologies, generating an impressive 9 TW of electricity. Bernard Swoczyna notes that these figures are comparable to the current electricity output from photovoltaics in Poland,” shares Bernard Swoczyna during our discussion.

For a more in-depth exploration of the role of energy storage in regulating the new power system centered on green sources, you can refer to the report titled “Energy Flexibility in Poland,” for which we proudly serve as the media patron.

Listen to our conversation and find out:

  • What are energy storage facilities and what forms can they take?
  • How is the world, Europe and Poland implementing energy storage?
  • Why is it worth knowing more about energy storage? What role do they play now and what will they be in 5-10 years, taking into account EU and national goals?
  • Without widespread implementation of energy storage, are we at risk of frequent blackouts?

10 episodes full of knowledge about energy storage

Energy storage doesn’t directly produce electricity, and as a result, it tends to receive less attention from the public compared to energy sources. While there’s extensive dialogue about the positive aspects of the renewable energy transformation and its potential benefits for the climate and the environment, recent years have highlighted the downside. The shift to renewable energy introduces challenges, including heightened uncertainty in energy supplies and a tangible threat of destabilizing our energy system. This is where our podcast series steps in, delving into the critical role of energy storage in addressing and mitigating these challenges.

In a series of ten episodes, we want to present you the most important information about energy storage.

In our inaugural episode, we lay the groundwork, exploring with our featured guests why numerous energy sector experts place their trust in energy storage and the extent of these expectations.

Subsequent episodes will delve into crucial regulations governing the functioning of energy storage facilities along the Vistula River. We will dedicate ample space to technological innovations, offering a fresh perspective on energy storage through the lens of startups. Additionally, we will broaden the scope to examine the significant role it plays, not just in facilitating the energy transformation of our country and mitigating blackout risks, but also in influencing new investments in production plants within the domestic economy and promoting independence from the global supply chain.

We invite you to listen to subsequent episodes of the series on E-magazyny Podcast every week!
