Beer and PV agrovoltaics in all its glory

In the charming town of Au in der Hallertau, situated an hour north of Munich in southern Germany, an innovative agrovoltaic system has been operating successfully for several months. This system employs photovoltaic (PV) modules to provide protection for hop crops that are utilized by a local brewery.

Farm owner Josef Wimmer initiated a collaboration with the local company Hallertauer Handelshaus, specializing in solar power plant construction. This partnership led to the development of an agrovoltaic installation with the capacity to supply energy to nearly 250 households. Encompassing an area of 1.3 hectares, the installation features photovoltaic panels that serve a dual purpose of generating electricity while also offering protection to the hop crops.

Impact of global warming on hop cultivation

Excessive sunlight can have adverse effects on the hop yield used in beer production. With the escalating impact of global warming and more frequent heatwaves in southern Germany, Josef Wimmer needed to devise a strategy to safeguard his crops.

The agrovoltaic installation serves a dual purpose: shielding the hops from intense sunlight and prolonging soil moisture retention. Managed by Bernhard Gruber, this approach enhances the hops’ resilience to diseases.

This unique initiative is regarded by German experts as the world’s first agroPV project centered exclusively on hop cultivation. It has captured the attention of scientists who are closely studying the influence of photovoltaics on crop yields. The findings from these observations are scheduled for release in October.

Germany supports agroPV projects

A few weeks ago, the German government unveiled its plans to establish solar power plants on agricultural land as part of its strategy to attain a total installed capacity of 215 GW for photovoltaic (PV) systems by 2030. This objective is twice the capacity recorded in 2022.
