U.S. Sodium-Ion Battery Manufacturer Natron Energy Inc. Announces Plans for First Gigafactory in North Carolina

First Sodium-Ion Battery Gigafactory in the U.S.

Natron Energy Inc. has announced plans to build the first sodium-ion battery gigafactory in the United States. The facility will have a production capacity of 24 GW and will be located at the Kingsboro CSX Select Megasite in Edgecombe County, North Carolina. The investment, valued at $1.4 billion, is expected to create over 1,000 jobs. The new factory will expand Natron Energy’s production capacity, currently based in Santa Clara, California, by 40 times.

Applications for Sodium-Ion Batteries

Natron Energy’s batteries are the only sodium-ion batteries to have received the UL certification (Underwriters Laboratories certification). These batteries will serve customers across sectors such as data centers, mobility, fast electric vehicle (EV) charging, microgrids, and telecommunications.

The project will receive support through a Job Development Investment Grant approved by the state’s Economic Investment Committee, as well as funding from the North Carolina Megasite Readiness Program. Notably, just weeks ago, another U.S.-based company, Peak Energy, secured $55 million to launch pilot production of its sodium-ion battery technology.
