Aldi and Greenvolt Next Accelerate Green Transition – 6.3 MW of Solar Power on the Roofs of 44 Stores
ALDI Partners with Greenvolt Next to Install Solar Systems on 44 Stores in Ireland
As part of a broad decarbonization program, discount retailer ALDI has announced a strategic partnership with Greenvolt Next, a European provider of decentralized renewable energy solutions. The collaboration aims to install photovoltaic (PV) systems on the roofs of 44 ALDI stores in Ireland. The total planned capacity of the installations is 6.3 MW, delivering an average of 95,500 kWh of green energy annually per store.
Green Investment in Retail
The first phase of the project will begin this year, covering 22 stores. The remaining 22 locations will be equipped with PV systems in 2026. Each store will be outfitted with a set of 288 solar panels, which will supply around 30% of the store’s electricity needs. The €5 million project is significant not only for ALDI’s decarbonization efforts but also for Greenvolt Next’s presence in the Irish market—it will double the company’s PV operations there by the end of 2025.
Decarbonization Through Decentralization
“The retail sector has enormous potential to support the energy transition by utilizing its own infrastructure,” said João Manso Neto, CEO of Greenvolt Group. “Large rooftop areas in retail stores can act as local power plants, which not only reduce the carbon footprint but also cut operating costs and increase companies’ energy independence.”
The partnership with ALDI marks another step in Greenvolt Next’s mission to deliver scalable renewable solutions for businesses. The company, which also operates in Poland, provides PV systems, energy storage solutions, and e-mobility infrastructure, offering flexible financing models—including PVaaS (photovoltaic-as-a-service)—that enable businesses to transition to clean energy without upfront investments.
Sustainability at the Core of ALDI’s Strategy
For ALDI, the project is part of a broader strategy to build energy resilience and minimize its environmental impact. “We are investing in technologies that genuinely change how our stores operate,” said Rachel Nugent, Sustainability Manager at ALDI Ireland. “Expanding our solar infrastructure will not only reduce emissions but also help us manage energy costs and ensure price stability for our customers.”
The project reflects a growing trend among businesses to adopt on-site renewable energy solutions, which offer cost savings, price predictability, and enhanced local energy resilience.
