Record-breaking run of a hydrogen train

The hydrogen train completed an impressive journey of precisely 1,741.7 miles on a single tank. This remarkable feat occurred in Colorado between March 20 and 22, 2024, setting a new Guinness World Record for the longest distance traveled on one charge.

What is the Flirt H2 hydrogen train?

Stadler, the Swiss manufacturer, unveiled its Flirt H2 model to a broader audience for the first time at the InnoTrans trade fair in Berlin back in 2022. This train was specifically crafted to replace diesel-powered locomotives on networks that are either non-electrified or partially electrified. Comprising two end wagons, it features an engine equipped with a hydrogen tank and fuel cells that supply energy to the onboard battery. Since its debut, numerous enhancements have been made to the prototype model. Subsequent tests carried out in Switzerland and at the dedicated ENSCO facility in Colorado, USA, have garnered worldwide admiration.

On March 20, the Flirt H2 unit embarked on its journey from a training ground situated in the heart of the USA. A team comprising engineers from Stadler and ENSCO operated the machine continuously for 46 hours, maintaining an average speed of 61 kilometers per hour (38 miles). This consistent pace allowed the train to cover a total distance of 1,741.7 miles, equivalent to almost 2,803 kilometers.

It’s noteworthy that although the train has a maximum speed capability of 160 km/h, it was intentionally limited during the test to minimize air resistance. Additionally, regular stops and starts were eliminated to optimize the achieved result.

Following the successful completion of the journey, officials from the Guinness Book of Records ratified the achievement, officially recognizing it as the longest distance traveled by a hydrogen-powered passenger train without refueling or recharging. This accolade surpasses the previous record held by the FLIRT Akku machine, which covered 224 kilometers in Germany in 2021.

Stadler also announced that, apart from securing a contract with the San Bernardino County Transportation Authority in California, two Italian rail operators have signed agreements for the procurement of 15 hydrogen-powered trains.
