The largest battery energy storage facility in the Netherlands has been launched

Developer and operator SemperPower has launched its second large Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in the Netherlands within a month. The new 30 MW, 68 MWh Pollux system is now the largest battery energy storage facility in the country.
Pollux was installed at the same location, Vlissingen-Oost, as the Castor BESS. Castor, launched a month ago, has a slightly smaller capacity of 30 MW and 62 MWh.
Component suppliers
The battery system for the Pollux project was supplied by Alfen, which also served as the general contractor. Alfen was responsible for the construction, electrical integration, and automation of the project.
Alfen previously supplied the battery system for SemperPower’s first project, a 9.3 MW/9.9 MWh system in Terneuzen, commissioned in 2021. For the Castor project, the battery system was provided by Rolls-Royce.
Huge demand from the Netherlands
According to TenneT, the transmission system operator in the Netherlands, the country needs 9 GW of new energy storage by 2030. However, the Netherlands still lags behind Belgium and Germany in deploying new systems.
The main challenges for the Netherlands in this area are the highly congested grid and the treatment of energy storage systems as both consumers and producers of electricity.
