Researchers at the Vienna University of Technology have successfully created an oxygen-ion battery, a technology known for its remarkable durability and the advantage of not relying on rare elements. This innovation holds the potential to revolutionize energy storage solutions by providing a more sustainable and accessible approach.

Oxygen-ion batteries offer a significant advantage in their exceptional longevity. The materials employed in their construction enable the battery to regenerate, preventing irreversible capacity loss during operation. Oxygen lost during charging and discharging cycles is replenished from the surroundings. Unlike traditional lithium-ion batteries, these prototypes do not rely on elements such as cobalt or nickel and are actively seeking alternatives to substances like lanthanum.

The innovation stems from the use of ceramics capable of absorbing and releasing doubly negatively charged oxygen ions. Applying an electrical voltage prompts these ions to move within the ceramic materials, generating an electric current. Furthermore, these materials are non-flammable, minimizing the risk of fire or explosion.

Although not suitable for devices like smartphones or electric cars due to its lower energy density (only 30% of lithium-ion batteries) and the requirement to operate at temperatures between 200 and 400°C, the oxygen-ion battery holds immense potential for electricity storage, particularly from renewable energy sources.

The collaborative efforts of Alexander Schmid, Martin Krammer, and Jürgen Fleige from the Institute of Chemical Technology and Analysis at TU Wien led to this groundbreaking battery technology. Their findings were detailed in the publication “Rechargeable Oxide Ion Batteries Based on Mixed Conducting Oxide Electrodes,” and a patent application has been initiated for this remarkable advancement.
