German renewable energy producer Encavis has announced the full commissioning of an energy storage system in Beemte Broekland near Apeldoorn. The new installation is designed to enhance the stability of the Dutch power system and improve the utilization of solar energy.

A hybrid solution

The new energy storage facility was located in the immediate vicinity of the Encavis‑owned Bloemenkamp photovoltaic farm. This configuration is intentional and enables:

  • Storage of surplus energy – capturing electricity produced by solar panels during periods of low demand.
  • Grid support – releasing energy during peak load periods or times of system stress.
  • Flexibility – rapid response to grid frequency fluctuations.

Advanced technology and partnerships

The project, with a capacity of 15 MW and 30 MWh, was delivered through extensive international cooperation. The developer is Green Energy Storage, while the general contractor is Dutch company Alfen. At the core of the system is CATL EnerOne+ technology, supplied by the global leader in battery cell manufacturing.

Market operation and energy offtake will be handled by Greenchoice, which will manage the storage system’s participation in lucrative balancing markets (FCR, aFRR, mFRR) as well as in grid congestion management.

“The commissioning of the battery system in Apeldoorn is another step in expanding our ability to deliver integrated energy solutions. Combining renewables with energy storage allows us to supply clean energy exactly when it is most needed,” emphasizes Mario Schirru, CEO of Encavis.
