Romania is also investing in energy storage
Energy Vault and Astor Enerji Announce a Global Strategic Partnership
The agreement foresees combining expertise in energy storage systems with experience in the production of transformers and high-voltage equipment.
2 GWh of Energy Storage for Projects in Romania
As part of the agreement, Energy Vault will supply Astor Enerji with B-VAULT™ BESS systems with a total capacity of up to 2 GWh for four photovoltaic farms in Romania. The 279 MW projects were acquired by the Turkish company in April 2025 through its Romanian subsidiary, Astor RO Energy. The storage systems will be integrated with the VaultOS™ platform, which will optimize their performance and ensure grid stability.
In return, Astor Enerji will supply transformers and high-voltage equipment for more than 1 GW of Energy Vault’s BESS projects in the U.S., Australia, and Europe. The cooperation is particularly important in the context of growing transformer shortages in the United States, where lead times have increased from about 50 weeks to as much as 127 weeks. According to a Wood Mackenzie report, U.S. demand for transformers has doubled since 2019, and shortages in 2025 may reach 30% for power transformers and 10% for distribution models. Thanks to the contract, Energy Vault gains access to high-quality equipment from outside U.S. regulatory risk zones.
Strategic and Economic Significance
The partnership between Energy Vault and Astor Enerji addresses two key trends in global energy: the rapid growth in power demand from AI data centers and the increasing share of renewables in the energy mix. To meet these challenges, advanced storage systems and reliable grid infrastructure are essential.
Marco Terruzzin, Chief Revenue Officer of Energy Vault, emphasized:
“This partnership is about more than just equipment supply. It’s about building technological capabilities and a supply chain that can meet the global demand for clean and stable energy.”
Olcay Doğan, CFO of Astor Enerji, added that the cooperation will allow the company to expand into the energy storage sector, while at the same time aligning with its mission to provide grid infrastructure supporting the energy transition.
Energy Vault and Astor Enerji – Leaders in Their Fields
Energy Vault is a global leader in grid-scale energy storage systems. The company develops technologies based on gravity storage, batteries, and green hydrogen, supported by proprietary energy management software. With the recent $300 million funding, the company is expanding through Asset Vault, the entity responsible for building and operating storage assets worldwide.
Astor Enerji, in turn, is a recognized manufacturer of power and distribution transformers as well as medium- and high-voltage equipment. It delivers its products to markets in Europe, Africa, Asia, and the United States.
