Joe Biden is launching a Cold War-era law to boost the renewable energy industry
On Monday, President Joe Biden utilized the Defense Production Act, a move anticipated to boost the manufacturing of photovoltaic modules and other components associated with the shift towards renewable energy.
The purpose of the Defense Production Act is to enhance the production of heat pumps, transformers, and other components crucial to the power grid. Additionally, tariffs on solar panels from Cambodia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam have been temporarily lifted for a period of two years. These measures by President Biden are a response to the escalating energy prices in the United States.

The Biden administration asserts that climate change is intricately tied to national security. Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks emphasized the importance of diminishing the United States’ reliance on gas and oil, deeming it crucial for national security. The measures announced by President Biden aim to fortify supply chains, ensuring the U.S. takes the lead in manufacturing components essential for the energy transition. Additionally, the initiative seeks to expedite the Department of Defense’s shift to clean energy to enhance military capabilities.
The Department of Energy highlights that the Defense Production Act’s authority will empower the federal government to invest in companies involved in producing renewable energy components. It is noteworthy that President Biden has allocated $6 billion to support nuclear power plants.

Simultaneously, the Commerce Department disclosed an inquiry into the imports of solar panels from Cambodia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam, aiming to uncover potential abuses. The department suspects that China might be utilizing these countries as conduits for exporting its products, particularly since the USA has officially restricted the export of modules from China.
