Electrolyzer Factory Opened in Estonia
Estonian Company Stargate Hydrogen Opens New Alkaline Electrolyzer Factory
Stargate Hydrogen, an Estonian company, has officially inaugurated a new factory for the production of alkaline electrolyzers. The opening ceremony was attended by key figures in European politics and industry, including Estonia’s Prime Minister Kristen Michal and Jorgo Chatzimarkakis, CEO of Hydrogen Europe.
Modular Growth Strategy vs. Market Stagnation
The newly opened factory has an annual production capacity of 140 MW. Thanks to a flexible development concept and the use of existing (brownfield) infrastructure, it can be easily expanded to over 1 GW annually with minimal additional investment. The facility is dedicated to manufacturing modern alkaline electrolysis systems, with the first deliveries already shipped to customers in Europe, Turkey, the Middle East, and India.
Unlike other manufacturers who have been forced to scale down or shut operations, Stargate Hydrogen has adopted a gradual development strategy based on modularity and optimal space usage. “There are several electrolyzer gigafactories on the market currently sitting idle and generating massive costs. We chose a different path — we grow in line with real demand,” said Marko Virkebau, CEO of Stargate Hydrogen. The company emphasizes that its production capacity is fully contracted through the end of 2025, and demand is growing among both existing and new customers.
European Support and IPCEI Status
Stargate Hydrogen’s project holds IPCEI (Important Project of Common European Interest) status, which has enabled strong support from investors and public development funds. “This is a textbook example of how well-managed public support can accelerate real industrial innovation. We need facilities like this to ensure Europe’s competitiveness and sovereignty in the energy transition,” commented Jorgo Chatzimarkakis.
Performance Through Material Innovation
Since its founding in 2021, Stargate Hydrogen has focused on enhancing electrolyzers through the use of novel ceramic catalysts and patented stack designs. The company’s goal is to significantly reduce the cost of green hydrogen, especially for hard-to-decarbonize industrial sectors such as steel, fertilizer, and chemical production.
Stargate Hydrogen’s clients include companies such as Fortum, Utilitas, ABB, and Rockfin, and production at the new factory is already underway. During the opening event, guests viewed finished systems ready for shipment, including a complete containerized electrolyzer destined for Fortum.
