Canadian company Anaergia Inc., specializing in renewable natural gas (RNG) production, has announced the signing of a contract with PepsiCo Alimentos Z.F. LTDA, a subsidiary of PepsiCo Inc. in Colombia. As part of the collaboration, Anaergia will supply an innovative waste-to-biogas processing system for a food production facility in Funza, near Bogotá. This project is another step toward sustainable energy in Latin America.

Anaerobic Fermentation Technology
Under the agreement, Anaergia will provide advanced anaerobic fermentation technology along with biogas upgrading and modernization systems. The Funza facility will annually convert around 50,000 tons of organic waste into renewable natural gas (RNG). The biogas produced will be used on-site to replace fossil gas, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by up to 3,700 tons of CO2 per year.

Support for PepsiCo’s Sustainability Goals
Jim Andrews, PepsiCo’s Director of Sustainability, highlighted the significance of the project in fulfilling the company’s environmental commitments. “With Anaergia’s solutions at our Funza facility, PepsiCo will produce renewable natural gas from waste and reduce our carbon footprint (…) This is another transformative initiative for PepsiCo that supports our commitment to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.”

The Funza project aligns with PepsiCo’s broader sustainability strategy, which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in global operations. PepsiCo Colombia, the third-largest PepsiCo unit in Latin America, plays a key role in achieving these goals.

A Milestone for Anaergia
The collaboration with PepsiCo in Colombia marks Anaergia’s first such project in South America. As Anaergia’s CEO, Assaf Onn, emphasized, the company is proud of its contribution to helping its clients meet their environmental goals: “With our proven solutions that convert organic waste into renewable fuels and energy, we help clients worldwide achieve their environmental and economic objectives.”

Anaergia offers a comprehensive approach to waste management—transforming waste into RNG, fertilizers, and water while reducing landfill use and greenhouse gas emissions. The success of the Funza project could pave the way for wider adoption of waste-to-energy technologies in Colombia and other countries.
