U.S. companies TerraFlow Energy and Shoals Technologies Group have signed a letter of intent aimed at the large-scale deployment of vanadium flow batteries. The partners plan to achieve an annual delivery capacity of up to 5 GW for energy storage systems. The investment is designed to meet growing demand from AI data centers, industry, and utilities.

The strategic agreement aims to commercialize large-scale vanadium flow batteries designed for long-duration energy storage.

Vanadium batteries and advanced switchgear

The project combines TerraFlow’s TerraWatt energy storage platform with Shoals’ PowerHub recombiner technology. The companies are also exploring the possibility of integrating AirLink—a solution designed specifically for data centers—at TerraFlow’s demonstration sites.

The groundbreaking technical specifications of TerraFlow’s vanadium flow batteries include:

  • Exceptional scalability — The storage systems can be configured flexibly, ranging from 10 MWh to as much as 5 GWh.
  • Remarkable service life — The Texas-based manufacturer claims degradation of less than 3.5% over 20 years of operation.
  • Record cycle life — The batteries can complete between 20,000 and 40,000 charge-discharge cycles without any loss of performance.

Responding to the energy appetite of AI data centers

TerraFlow co-founder and CEO, Jon Parrella, emphasizes that the long-duration, uninterrupted power architecture was designed for direct integration with critical energy infrastructure. Joining forces with Shoals is expected to provide the operational expertise needed to deploy projects on such an enormous scale.

Jeff Tolnar, president of Shoals, notes that rising electricity demand—driven by the growth of artificial intelligence, industry, and electric mobility—is creating challenges for the power grid on an unprecedented scale. U.S.-developed vanadium technologies are expected to help stabilize the system and ensure an uninterrupted power supply for the most demanding customers.
