Rolls-Royce will supply technology for Sunly’s energy storage systems. A 490 MWh investment in Latvia.
Estonian renewable energy developer Sunly has signed a contract with the British engineering group Rolls-Royce’s subsidiary for the supply of four battery energy storage systems. The total contracted capacity of the systems will be 490 MWh, and all projects will be located in Latvia. The British manufacturer will deliver its mtu EnergyPack storage technology along with the mtu EnergetIQ software platform, which will be used for grid stabilization, renewable energy integration, and balancing electricity supply and demand.
First Quarter of 2027 and Plans for Hybridization
The official announcement of the contract coincided with the opening of Sunly’s solar park in Valmiera, which is described as one of the first hybrid energy parks in Latvia. The first battery energy storage system will be built at this site, with commissioning planned for the first quarter of 2027. The remaining three projects covered by the agreement are expected to be completed later in the same year.
In addition to the firm contract in Latvia, both companies also signed a letter of intent regarding a potential additional 300 MWh battery storage project in Risti, Estonia.
Over 1.5 GWh of Capacity in the Baltic States
Representatives of Rolls-Royce emphasized that the latest agreement with Sunly significantly strengthens the company’s position in the region. Including this new deal and previously secured contracts in Latvia and Lithuania, the total capacity of energy storage systems delivered by the British group in the Baltic States will exceed 1,500 MWh once all ongoing projects are completed.
