Ford Expands Into Grid-Scale Energy Storage With Major Deal With EDF Power Solutions

Automotive giant Ford Motor Company is rapidly expanding its new division, Ford Energy, which focuses on large-scale energy storage systems. The company has just signed a long-term framework agreement with EDF Power Solutions. The contract covers the North American market and предусматри the delivery of a substantial volume of battery energy storage systems over the next five years.

Containerized Storage at Gigawatt Scale

Under the agreement, EDF will be able to purchase energy storage systems from Ford with a combined capacity of up to 4 GWh per year. Over the full five-year period, this translates into a total commitment of approximately 20 GWh of storage capacity.

Initial deliveries are expected to begin in 2028.

The deal follows the unveiling of Ford Energy’s flagship product in May 2026: the Ford Energy DC Block, a standardized energy storage unit housed in a 20-foot container. The system is based on advanced lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery chemistry and will initially be offered in two configurations: a two-hour and a four-hour duration system.

Focus on Supply Chain Stability

For grid operators and large-scale developers, supply chain reliability has become a critical concern. Ford Energy is positioning itself around this need.

Lisa Drake, head of Ford Energy, emphasized that the company is not only delivering hardware but also ensuring predictable quality and long-term operational reliability. The brand was created specifically for customers who cannot afford uncertainty in energy storage deployments.

Ford Energy was established in late 2025 with a clear mission: to manufacture and deliver grid-scale battery systems built in the United States. Its target customers include utilities, large data centers, and major commercial and industrial users.

The company plans to invest approximately $2 billion over the next two years to scale up production capacity to 20 GWh annually. First customer deliveries are expected to begin by the end of 2027.
