Large amounts of funding have been allocated to the advancement of Italy’s environmental protection sector. This financial support from the EU aims to bolster the production of key equipment, including storage batteries, solar panels, heat pumps, wind turbines, and electrolyzers.

Green light for a new subsidy program

The European Commission has given the green light to Italy’s state aid program, part of the Recovery and Resilience Facility, totaling EUR 1.1 billion. This initiative will provide support to producers of green technology. Subsidies, reaching up to EUR 350 million, will be earmarked for the manufacturing of various equipment, including energy storage systems, photovoltaic panels, heat pumps, wind turbines, hydrogen electrolyzers, and carbon dioxide capture devices. Margrethe Vestager, the EU Commissioner for Competition, emphasizes the importance of investment in achieving a climate-neutral economy, while also ensuring that competition distortions are kept to a minimum through this program.

This is yet another action supporting hydrogen production

Rome’s latest subsidy instrument marks the third hydrogen industry support program approved by the European Commission in the current year. Back in January, a EUR 550 million initiative was unveiled. These funds are aimed at supporting investments facilitating the substitution of methane and other fossil fuels with renewable hydrogen. This versatile energy source can complement electrification efforts and enhance energy efficiency in various production processes.

An allocation of EUR 370 million is earmarked for initiating the “Valley of Green Hydrogen” project in the southern Italian region of Puglia. This endeavor forms part of the EU IPCEI (Important Projects of Common European Interest) Hy2Infra program, which seeks to boost the availability of renewable hydrogen and expedite the realization of the European Green Deal across several countries including Poland, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Slovakia.
