The Minister of Climate and Environment, Anna Moskwa, has announced a significant milestone in Poland’s energy landscape. The General Directorate for Environmental Protection (GDOŚ) has issued an environmental decision permitting the construction and operation of the first nuclear power plant in the country. This decision marks a breakthrough in efforts to enhance Poland’s energy security.

Environmental decision

The comprehensive environmental decision, spanning over 550 pages along with annexes, signifies the culmination of an extensive evaluation process regarding the environmental impact of the nuclear power plant investment. A pivotal finding of this assessment is that with the implementation of appropriate technical, technological, and organizational measures, the environmental impact of the project is expected to be minimal.

Environmental impact monitoring

According to GDOŚ, the construction and operation of the nuclear power plant in Poland are not anticipated to yield significant adverse environmental effects. The project has been deemed unlikely to detrimentally impact Natura 2000 areas, natural habitats, or water quality, whether underground or surface. Moreover, it is projected to produce minimal emissions of gases or dust into the environment and to introduce only negligible amounts of radioactive substances into soil, water, or air.

Crucially, continuous monitoring of both environmental and radiological impacts will be integral to the process. Collaboration with the consortium comprising Westinghouse Electric Company and Bechtel, entrusted with the design and construction of the power plant, is slated to commence in 2026.

Nuclear power plant in Poland – international trust

The nuclear power plant project has garnered international recognition, as evidenced by cross-border consultations involving 14 countries, including Austria, Germany, and Ukraine. With operational readiness anticipated by 2033, Poland stands poised to inaugurate its first nuclear power plant, marking a substantial stride toward sustainable and self-reliant energy.
