North Koreans will make “donations” to state-owned PV farms

North Korea is embarking on an interesting initiative by urging its citizens to participate in funding the development of solar farms across the nation. As reported by DailyNK, local people’s committees at the city and county levels are set to initiate campaigns to motivate residents to contribute donations towards these solar energy projects. This move showcases the country’s efforts to tap into renewable energy sources and involve its citizens in the process of sustainable development.

The initial donations from the public have been observed in Kasong Province. The local People’s Committee has instructed each family to contribute 30,000 KPW (approximately 135 Polish zlotys) towards this cause. This demonstrates the local government’s push to involve residents in supporting the construction of solar farms and advancing renewable energy efforts.

Micro-installations are not enough

Numerous households in North Korea currently rely on off-grid photovoltaic (PV) setups from China. These low-power systems offer electricity for lighting homes and operating audio and video devices.

While the government acknowledges the presence of solar panels in homes and commercial establishments, it recognizes that these installations are insufficient to meet the nation’s overall electricity requirements. The implementation of PV farms is envisioned as a remedy to this challenge.

The introduction of large-scale photovoltaic facilities represents a significant stride towards grid enhancement, aiming to provide continuous electricity access to the public around the clock. Currently, this availability is restricted due to limitations in the existing infrastructure.

Alternating production

In North Korea, factories face the necessity of staggering their production schedules to prevent overburdening the power grid. Energy-intensive manufacturing facilities activate their equipment in shifts to manage the load.

A considerable number of households remain unconnected to the electricity grid altogether. The promise of grid connection in return for donations is among the methods used to encourage the public to participate in co-financing photovoltaic farms. This approach seeks to involve citizens in supporting the expansion of renewable energy infrastructure.
