India with record energy storage

The Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) has inaugurated the biggest battery energy storage system in the country, which collaborates with a solar power plant. Situated in Rajnandgaon, the system boasts a capacity of 152 MWh.

The energy generated by photovoltaic (PV) systems is stored in a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) and utilized during peak hours when there is a high demand for electricity.

Effective solutions

This initiative employs double-sided photovoltaic modules, enhancing electricity generation by reflecting light off the ground. This approach sets a new benchmark for large-scale renewable energy projects. The electricity generated by this innovative project is slated to be procured by the state of Chhattisgarh.

To ensure stability and reliability in power supply, the system incorporates a 132 kV double-circuit transmission line leading to the 220/132 kV substation of Chhattisgarh State Power Transmission Company Limited (CSPTCL), facilitating seamless integration into the existing power grid.

The long-term electricity purchase agreement by the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) safeguards the sustainability of the system. This project has come to fruition through financial support from the World Bank and the Clean Technologies Fund under the Innovation in Solar Power and Hybrid Technologies project, alongside contributions from national credit agencies.
